Re: Old Australia
The picture is titled "Sidmouth Valley showing Macquarie River", which would be about 10km WSW of the village of Tarana, near Kinghorne Falls. Probably black swans in the picture. Preferred habitat from Birdlife Australia: "Black Swans...occur wherever there is a wetland , from river estuaries, bays...

Old Australia
... Can you guess (without cheating) which lake in Australia is pictured below? gftrr.jpg Some clues. The year of the drawing is 1815. The area was not settled until 1815. So no clearing of land. Can you guess the trees by the lakeside? Looks like swans and ducks abounding in... the Macquarie River,...

Re: Positive Water Pressure on the Slopes
Thank you for your reply Duane. I think what helps me visualise all this, is you only have positive water pressure working if the landscape is already full of water? That is, whatever moving out of the contours/raised streams has no choice but to ride (through the ground) above the pre-filled clay/f...

Re: Positive Water Pressure on the Slopes
I'm seeing a raised creek bed, with the water in it charging laterally out into the lower surrounding floodplain, that water is effectively "springing" "up" out of the surface of the floodplain.

Positive Water Pressure on the Slopes
I can visualise chains of ponds and how that leads to positive water pressure into the floodplain. What I cannot visualise is achieving the same on the steeper country. Can anyone help?

Thistle Density
On page 131, it is said that a 10% coverage of thistles represents a maintenance level for fertility. 10% of what---the property? 1 in every 10 plants?

Surface Fertility and Grass Roots
The book mentions a number of times to concentrate organic compounds at the surface for that is where grass obtains most of its fertility from. I thought that grass roots went many feet below the surface. So I'm not sure why there is a concerted advocacy in the book for keeping the fertility at the ...

Trees on Tarwyn Park
Apart from the gallery forest running through the property, there doesn't seem to be many trees at Tarwyn Park. I thought the book advocated tree belts on contour, on the high points etc.

Eucalyptus Density in CSIRO Study
I heard Peter Andrews mention a CSIRO study of an unspoilt intact Australian forest remnant where it was found there was only a limited number of eucalyptus per the hectare. Would anyone have any knowledge of the particular study as I'd like to read its contents.
