In both Peter's books it is stated that (some) plants can utilise carbon directly from the soil. Other than "robbing the sugars" produced by the photosyntheisis of other plants (where the carbon comes from the air) is anyone aware of any other mechanisms whereby plants can utilise soil carbon direct...
