Re: Summer grass

Just a quick post. Ok, first thing you do is figure out a bit more about what grasses you actually have, the area you're in has what are known as "summer dominated pastures" which means you get far more growth in summer than winter (which is fairly typical across most of Australia). Go to : http://w...

Re: Water

Easy question first, a pathogen is any disease causing organism, it could be bacteria, virus, fungus whatever. They are a problem for livestock and are generally an issue when stock are watering in streams (given that the first thing cattle do when they walk into a stream is to have a leak or a crap...

Re: Exhaust emissions fertiliser

Sorry about the delay in replying, now lets look at some of the points/questions you have raised. Moving on (or forward as some would put it), what effect would this CO2 have on the soil? I'm guessing probably very little and would most would escape before it could be fixed (I'm not too well up on s...

Re: Exhaust emissions fertiliser

Thanks I will, I did make a mistake in my first post, I forgot to take into account that the CO2 concentration of the exhaust gasses was 6.4% so to fix it is a simple matter of multiplying my answer by 6.4% which gives 19.8kg/Ha of CO2, or converting it to straight carbon is 5.4kg/Ha.

Re: Exhaust emissions fertiliser

Are you sure you want to know? It's going to be long winded. OK here goes, don't say I didn't warn you. I took data from exhaust emissions analysis which showed a breakdown of the elements contained within a typical sample. This includes CO2 --Carbon dioxide 63679.7 ppm CO --Carbon monoxide 80.6 pp...

Re: Bent Grass

With mulching mowers it falls between the blades of grass and stays moist, piling it up kills the grass underneath by smothering it, you get the same effect with weedmat, sheets of tin, newspaper etc. Now to this issue with the Bent Grass, I've never had anything to do with bent grass (or at least I...

Re: Bent Grass

With a name like that Kiwi I would have thought you would love bent grass. Peter's suggestion for control: 1. encourage it to grow to its maximum height 2. then cut it and collect the cuttings 3. then make a windrow/contour with the cuttings ABOVE where the bent is growing 4. trickle/pulse water th...

Thanks Euan, what it means is that termite emissions are miniscule compared to human emissions. Generally everything is converted to CO2 equivalents, methane, from memory, has around six times the energy holding capability of CO2, so is basically a "worse" greenhouse gas. Methane levels are only a s...

Methane is more the issue with termites however their methane output is much less than that of human activities. The US puts ot the equivalent (in Terragrammes* of CO2) of 585.3 (in 2007) of methane whereas global emissions of methane from termites is only 20-29Tg. Source: http://www.epa.gov/methane...

If they're eating that as a last resort then you probably should've gotten rid of your cattle earlier and all it's doing is speeding up the inevitable.

Take a closer look, if you see very small fly like insects they're more than likely native bees, far more more important for pollination of commercial crops than most people realise.
