Re: Silver Birch Trees

Kez, I have copied this excerpt from the Royal Horticultural society. How to take hardwood cuttings Hardwood cuttings are often grown on outdoors in the ground in a prepared trench. However, if you are only taking a small number, you can grow them on in containers too. Some, dogwoods for example, be...

Re: Silver Birch Trees

Hello Kez, I dont know how much time you have on your hands but this is well worth the effort. This time of year is great to take cuttings of fantastic looking ornamental deciduous trees. If you have a spare patch You can get going a tree per square foot or (30cm as they say these days). You could d...

Trees to plant

Pittosporum undulatum and willows Salix babylonica (not illegal to plant this) I am bias about blackberry and other so called noxious weeds as I am coming to love them for the positive impact they have on the Australian environment. I am observing with an open mind and see areas full of weeds, resto...

Brett I am so happy to see that you have become inspired once again. I will collect fresh seed for you. I will see what else I can come up with that is suitable. I have some clematis (vines) I work amongst all this stuff and should be able to find some stuff that will do well. Just plant your forest...

Why not video it

It would be great to see this documented on video or even if you could get Australian Story, Landline or someone else interested to do it.

Mr Dumaresq is on the right track. Dont forget shrubs, sub shrubs, herbs and grasses which Peter points out in his book keeps the water table higher. Yes Brett let us know if you have any salinity problems. This is interesting.

Lake Eyre

Brett I watched this show on Lake Eyre recently filling. It was truly amazing to watch it flourish. What was very disappointing was to see the cattle driven into the land while it was flourishing to feed on the green. Before long it was gone. I cant help wonder what would happen if it was left alone...

So what is option 3

farm 50% leave 50%
I like that Idea

But that is 50% loss to farmer in production I guess
But a percentage of saving in labour, costs and lifestyle. I guess the farmer has to work that one out for themselves, (or read back from the brink) is that what you are saying?

Brett, keep in mind that areas change. Grass land one day and forest the next. This happens naturally in nature...The seeds blow/travel and survive where the climate, mico-climate and conditions are right. Quails survive in many places that are full of trees. Provide areas of safety such as logs wit...

HI Duane, I am sure that reading what this (Gorse) means is of great benefit but to who. I am not a sceptic about Peters work, I think his knowledge is fantastic. In regard to Gorse and others, if they are working to restore the landscape, I think this is great for people such as Shane and myself wh...

Ian, I dont like that outlook. I have a little more faith in mankind. When things get crucial, (especially here in Australia), people listen. They etch out the bull *#" and start to take notice. This is when Peter Andrews will be heard. He will have the answers and the proof people are looking for a...

Yes Jenni, I was also surprised to find that it said "except Caltrop" as this has been such a major problem for farmers. In the past it has been preferred to use chemical controls but low and behold all along it has been known that this little butterfly could do the job and be conserved at the same ...
