Re: The War on Willows
Hi Ghosta, When I first came to this site I was skeptical about certain Weeds (Gorse) in my case, I couldn't see how it could have a positive affect. But this site has helped me understand that all plants are Wonderful and are all doing good work. It will come to you too eventually. Just keep an op...

Re: The War on Willows
Fella down the road raves on about hemp, hemp clothes, hemp houses, hemp for everything as a carbon store and how the government should legalise and subsidise it blah blah blah........... Think he may be returning too much carbon back to the atmosphere. He goes quiet when I ask him where does the en...

Re: The War on Willows
Jodi, your posts reminded me of my uncle, now departed who used to argue wih anyone about the introduction of myxamatosis. Uncle Bert helped raise his siblings as a teenager when my grandfather died. This was during the depression and rabbit was the staple diet. He went to work on farms and was empl...

Re: The War on Willows
There are not a lot of "sceptics" about willow removal posting here so perhaps thats one reason why the response has been limited, but to be fair Shirley has taken on board the sucession concept with her keen observation (and photo) of succession happening. Dr Wilsons paper is a little short on deta...

Re: The War on Willows
Thank for posting the photos Shirley. It will be interesting to see if the casurina actually does shade out and kill the willow beneath it (in your last photo). It would be worthwhile knowing if the sucession idea actually works, and if it does which species do it the most effectively. Interesting t...

Re: The War on Willows
Ghosta in reply to your query you havent explained what changed to make certain willows a problem. Try this: It is invasive. It spreads too quickly It's residue fails to break down. Its a monoculture. It's killing ALL of our catchments. It prevents biodiversity from growing beneath it. It takes mor...

Re: The War on Willows
Jodi...Weeping Willows are not on the weed species list, and all willow advice Ive seen excludes this species. If "they" are removing weeping willows then we can only guess at their motives. Duane, you havent answered my question. You have told us when certain willows were decared a WONS, but you ha...

Re: The War on Willows
You say quite clearly that the war on willows has nothing to do with the fact that these trees are not indigenous to Australia. Who said that? Ill answer your question though. Whether or not a nuisance plant is a native has no relevence. Bracken fern and wattle are examples of native plants that ma...

Re: The War on Willows
Sceptic, I recall back in the 70s and 80s an elderly neighbour of my parents, who in his advanced years, began the task of replanting along watercourses and denuded areas on his family farm. Everyone else seem to be planting the quick growing hybrid willows, while he exclusively grew natives. I help...

Re: The War on Willows
[quote="Shirley Henderson". For the main, the stance against willows is merely due to the fact that they are not a native plant.[/quote] Thanks for the reply Shirley. I am unable to find ANY document on the net that gives this reason as the major reason for willow removal. Would you be kind enough t...

Re: The War on Willows
Shirley, the reasons are well established and well documented. Its simply a matter of doing a search on the internet or reading some of the publictions put out by authorities urging control of willows. Perhaps the defenders of willows posting here dont want to know the reasons, or dont want the reas...

Re: The War on Willows
Ill ask the questions again- Can anyone post the reasons why there has been a concerted effort to eradicate willows over the last few decades? What has changed?

Re: The War on Willows
Back to the topic of Willows.
Can anyone post the reasons why there has been a concerted effort to eradicate willows over the last few decades? What has changed? The answers are readily avaiable on the net, but Im wondering if anyone here is aware of them.

Re: The War on Willows
Im relatively new to the idea of NSF, so I came to this site to find out information about how others have been able to apply the principles and how the concept is progressing. This site looked a though it may be a usefull source of information for farmers wishing to adopt NSF. The subject certainly...
