On ABC News last night Sarah Clarke reported on a native rush that was taking over Lake Barmah, a major wetland on the Murray. See
http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2008/0 ... tion=world
The CMA's and the Yorta Yorta people see this as an invasive spp threatening to take over the lake and wetland and fearing its spread to other wetlands.
The MDBS has been in drought for the last 10 years. If you remember last year John Howard said the MD was so dry that NO water allocations were to be given.
What plant would be alive after 10 years without water.
What we are really witnessing here is the first recovery stage of a major wetland system. These wetlands WERE MEANT TO CHOKE with reeds, rushes etc., This was the natural system system of the river: to slow the water down, filter and trap sediments, spread the water across the floodplain, add carbon and fertility to the system and now the people in charge see the native giant rush as an INVASIVE WEED!!!!!
These people must never have witnessed the start of a wet cycle ....these plants are Natures way of implementing the first stage of a repair mechanism and these people want to BURN it!!!!
These plants are massive accumulators of Carbon and grow rapidly so that they can supply carbon and fertility to the system.
Its time the people in charge of our future were held to ACCOUNT.

It is no great surprise.
This mindset is what has created the current problems.
They see our rivers as irrigation channels, that must be clear and flowing. The local creek where I live is concreted, so symbolic of the way nature has been viewed. It is like manicured gardens, where everything is so neat and tidy. Yet it is very time consuming to maintain and in the long term unsustainable.
Where are you evolution!

I too saw the news report. Why don't you contact the ABC and show them how the natural system works. This report needs to be challenged by NSF to further the education of all. Headline, "Myth Busters!"
Many hands make light work.
Unfortunately, too many hands stirring anti clockwise, has spoiled mother natures recipe.
Back to basics.

I rang and spoke to the reporter.....she said she could not put the alternate view because she didnt know when they would be down at Lake Barmah to film again.
I got the number of the person in charge of the project and Peter spoke to him.....man's ignorance of the natural functions of the MDBS has eluded us for 200 years and got us in the mess we currently face....what hope do we have that they will suddenly be ENLIGHTENED!!!
