"using lantana / privet"

Post by Euan McLean » Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:16 am

At P189 Peter explains he would use lantana + to "break the cycle of gum trees" / allelopathic effect and I could understand this, lantana does grow well under gum trees and it does produce good soil under.
But I'm querying what comes next. Do you then "clear out" the lantana to allow "crop / grazing" to establish now you have "beaten the gums"?
Clearing lantana is quite a process and not to be taken lightly, so if you have a choice!
Again my reading of the books lead me to conclude that promoting biodiversity is the optimum, but I'll suggest lantana and privet can and do produce monocultures if given half a chance. And they are surface rooted plants, surely not "bringing up minerals"?
