Below is a list of the original plants in the Dripstone area near Wellington at the time of settlement @1835.
This information is contained in the Dripstone Story by George Althofer published by Wellington Historical Society in 1985.


Plants of Dripstone Area
The plant life of the area has been sadly depleted since the first impact of white settlers 150 years ago.
A goodly number of species (mainly orchids) are now extinct in the area whilst many others of the shrubs and ground flora are very close to extinction. This has partly been caused by the grazing of the hilly country by sheep and goats but even more so by the depredations by rabbits since their introduction in the 1890s of last century. The marvellous orchid population of the hills in vicinity of Dripstone has now gone forever, mainly as the result of wholesale clearing but finally by the all-encompassing rabbit plague. These pests were able to invade every nook and cranny where the plough could not go.
The only epiphytic orchid to penetrate to the area was Cymbidium Canaliculatum, never plentiful, was mainly extinguished by the clearing of their host trees. The last one seen was in Gigmullarie Gully about 1925.
There is still a chance that some lately scarce species of shrubs and ground cover plants will regenerate in their strongholds — Pine Hill, Cobler, Eagle Hawk, Sugarloaf, Oaky Hill and Gigmullarie Hills. Only however if these places are not subject to overgrazing. There is very little chance of this however under the present economic set up. Each acre of rocky hill land is now taxed to the same extent as the fertile lower acres. That means either the clearing of totally unsuited country for grazing purposes or (in some cases) cultivation or perhaps the grazing of stock amongst the standing timber, Either means the extinction of ground cover plants and the further disruption of nature's cycle.
The tree life of the area is much the same in species numbers as it was 150 years ago although sadly reduced in some cases. These species are now very close to extinction or perhaps wholly so in some cases:

If anyone can enlighten us as to the native plants that sequentially colonised in a successionary way from this list in the Dripstone area we can start to divulge small bits of the puzzle.

Hello Duane, It's me again Shirley. I would also love to know the answer to that question of sequence but it's NOW we have to act on documenting everything we can find out isn't it. I too am hoping that someone with lots of knowledge will post some info for us. As I was shown at my visit to Muloon in May wherever there was a weed popping up there seemed to be an opportunistic plant beginning life beside it, be it native or another weed. It was making use of the shelter the loosening of the soil and excess water run-off be it transpiration , dew or rain. In my experience I have found that any plants growing provide another kind of microclimate or situation for another kind of plant to grow. I know you understand that but not everyone does. Its sometimes a very slow process but can be very rapid also. I would like to point out two plants that do create a nursing environment for other opportunist plants to set their seed and begin to grow. Wattles local to your area but Acacia decurrens is a very fast grower. Bursaria spinosa which also can begin life on dry, arid or compacted soils. This plant also provides much needed shelter, food and habitat for smaller birds that can then bring in their droppings full of grass seed and many others. The spiky bursaria also keeps out predators such as feral cats and larger birds. It a great habitat and provides a semi shaded canopy for new plants to begin underneath. Not everyone likes these beacuse of their spikes but they definitley have their use. Heres 2 plants to help kick off the topic any way.
