On page 131, it is said that a 10% coverage of thistles represents a maintenance level for fertility. 10% of what---the property? 1 in every 10 plants?

Nature strives all the time to achieve a state of equilibrium or Balance.

In a farming situation, where stock are running, thy will eat all the sweet, edible plants extracting carbon (fertility). So there has to be plants in the system to restore or maintain that balance. Thistles are excellent in that role.
